What are OTAscosting you?
Enter your rooms, rate and OTA mix to see the commission your property hands to online travel agents each year — and what shifting bookings direct could be worth.
How it works
The maths,in the open.
- Room nights = rooms × 365 × occupancy.
- Room revenue = room nights × average daily rate.
- Commission today = room revenue × OTA share × commission rate.
- After the shift, the OTA share falls to 100% minus your target direct share, and we subtract your direct channel cost on the bookings that moved.
The defaults are example figures, not benchmarks — replace them with your own. For the full picture, read what OTA commission really costs South African hotels, or see how our Direct Bookings playbook works.
Questions.
How much commission do OTAs charge hotels in South Africa?
OTA commission typically runs between 15% and 25% of the booking value, depending on the platform, your contract and any visibility programmes you’ve opted into. Check your own contracts — the calculator lets you enter your actual rate.
Is a direct booking free?
No. Direct bookings carry their own costs — paid search, metasearch, payment fees and your booking engine. That’s why the calculator includes a direct channel cost. The goal is a lower blended cost of acquisition and owning the guest relationship, not zero cost.
What is a realistic direct booking share?
It varies by property, location and brand strength. One five-star Johannesburg hotel we work with reached 76% direct vs OTA and third-party bookings in 2025. Your starting point and market will shape what’s achievable.
